For now, we only copyedit books. Our copyediting guru humorously asked the person seated next to him, “Are buses italic in Chennai?” on seeing a crowded bus slanted to its left when carrying an overload of office-going people on a busy morning. We came from a school that did not think copyediting is a profession. We came from a school that taught us the “philosophy” of copyediting to enrich our perspective. Every mark made by copyedit carried a purpose, the larger purpose of making better.
We see copyeditors as differentiators to books who skim the errors out of author’s text. Copyedit is not a sufficient but a necessary condition for books to be in order.
